LIVE on BFM 89.9: When Weddings Lead to Debt (Today, 5:30 PM)

Wedding season is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration — but for many young couples, it’s also becoming a time of financial stress.

Earlier today, I had the opportunity to speak on BFM 89.9 about a growing concern — how more young couples are starting their marriages already in debt because of wedding costs.

Many are borrowing RM20,000 to RM60,000 just to fund the “perfect day”. But the real challenge begins after the celebration ends — when loan repayments, rent or housing, car instalments, and family responsibilities start to pile up.

Here are a few key points I shared:

💡 Start with the marriage, not the wedding. The day is symbolic, but the partnership lasts a lifetime.

⚠️ Debt adds pressure early. Emotional and financial stress can quickly strain a new relationship.

💬 Talk about money early. Discuss income, debts, lifestyle expectations, and future goals before tying the knot.

📊 Spend within your means. A simple rule — your wedding shouldn’t exceed 10–15% of your combined annual income.

❤️ Focus on what matters. A meaningful wedding isn’t about impressing others; it’s about building a foundation you can sustain together.

A wedding is one day. A marriage is a journey.

The best way to start it is without financial regret.
